Command Prompt Tricks, Hacks & Codes

Command Prompt is one of the most powerful tools in Windows; but sadly, it is also the most ignored one. Things were not always like this; but with the advent of GUI based operating systems, people started feeling that computing through command based tools was boring. This ultimately lead the command prompt into obscurity.

However, the command prompt is not useless. In fact, it can be pretty

The Awesome World of the Desktop Color Laser Printer

By: Sarah Patrick

For the past three decades we, the computing public, have been saddled with the curse of the inkjet printer. From the late 70’s on, companies such as Epson, Hewlett-Packard and Canon introduced the computing public to the capability to print documents right at the desktop. Gone were the days of going to a specialty shop to get a document printed. Now we could print those documents directly from the computer to the printer sitting mere inches away. But, what the public didn’t know and these companies did, was that the cost of operating those printers, normally referred to as Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), was greater than one could imagine. Today, it is a fact that razor companies basically give away the razor because they know where the real money will be made…the blades. Well, that same philosophy used to hold true for the desktop color laser printer market when these units first appeared. There was a time when the desktop color laser printer was found solely in the business environment. Now, that is all about to change for the better. And, the reason things are changing is solely due to the introduction of the desktop color laser printer along with it’s lower TCO and longer life span.

A word of warning prior to making your purchase: The desktop color laser printer that you would find at the bottom of the price range WILL have a higher TCO than the one that you would encounter say at the mid to high $1,000 range. But, over the expected life span of that $1,000 desktop color laser printer you will save enough money to purchase your next one.

Desktop Color Laser Printer operating costs are extremely low and the quality of the print coming from these things is just tremendous. The printed documents that the new generation of desktop color laser printers produces will blow away anything you have seen before.

The desktop color laser printer is a total blessing to the computing public at large. Gone are the days of spending hundreds of dollars to replace ink cartridges that might dry up or leak and would most assuredly only produce a very limited number of quality prints before streaking and fading. Now a person can expect to get thousands, if not tens of thousands of high quality color pages for what would essentially be the same price if TCO was not factored in. There are many TCO tools on the Internet, do a search and you will find one. These tools are some of the most valuable research one can do when making a decision to purchase a desktop color laser printer for use in the home.

When making your next decision to invest in desktop color printer, make the smart choice, go with a desktop color laser printer and save yourself money and headaches. When compared to current inkjet printers the desktop color laser printer technology will win hands down. And, the total cost of ownership for a desktop color laser printer is on average 50-60% cheaper than that old inkjet.

Basic Guide For Computer Parts & Software

By: Adriana N.

For most people, computer parts and the innards of a computer are something that rarely needs to be looked at up close. Everyone knows it has something to do with IBM and Bill Gates, but that's about it. But the fact is, today's computers parts are the result of massive technological innovations in microprocessors, semiconductors and programming. Here's a brief guide for what makes up a computer.

Most of the circuitry and the brains of a computer are nowadays built-into motherboards and processors. The rest of it is just so that these two can function properly and interface with the user. The 'rest' in this case includes keywords, monitors, the mouse, etc.

The biggest processor makers are Intel and AMD, and the choice is usually whatever happens to be the latest in the market. Choices for the motherboard and chipset are a lot more varied and depend on usage, budget, location, etc. It's best to look it up on computer hardware review and benchmarking sites before buying anything.

The other major computer parts worth mentioning include the SMPS or power supply, hard disk drive (hdd), memory (RAM) and video cards (better known as a display or graphics card). Sound cards are these days built into the motherboard, and so are modems and LAN cards required to connect to the internet or join a network. But some people might still consider getting more powerful external cards and devices for these functions.

The power supply is worth mentioning because unlike other electronic gadgets, a computer's power supply is a very important and delicate part. It provides power separately to the motherboard and each motorized part (hdd, cd/dvd-rom, cooling fans, led displays). Each of these power cables is critical to the operation of the computer, and needs a strong and stable power supply.

Also to be noted that laptop computers and desktop computers have different needs, as far as parts are concerned. In a laptop, most of the parts are factory built, and there's not much room for customization by adding cards or a bigger monitor, etc. On the other hand, a desktop computer can be ripped apart, upgraded and customized with better video cards, faster LAN cards, a bigger hdd, more RAM and anything else that's required.

As far as operating systems are concerned, Microsoft Windows is still the world's most dominant OS. An OS, by the way, is what interfaces between all the hardware on one side, with all the software and the user on the other side. Alternative OS options include Unix, Linux, FreeBSD and various other Unix derivatives and clones.

Commonly used software choices for web browsers include Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome. Office software choices include MS-Office and OpenOffice. The rest is pretty much dependent on what the computer is to be used for.

In summary, the computer parts and software required basically depend on budget considerations and usage. For instance, someone who needs to run advanced multimedia software like Photoshop or play online video games might need a powerful desktop computer with add-on video cards, a bigger monitor and more cooling fans. Someone who simply wants to browse the web might find a factory built config for a laptop quite sufficient.

How to Find Computer Parts

By: Adriana N.

Every now and again, your computer may need computer parts in order to restore it back to working order. In the event that you are not very technologically minded, you may want to know why some parts are needed and where you can purchase them to help save yourself some money when you are having to take your computer to a shop for repairs.

Some times your laptop computer or desktop computer can go on the fritz and that frankly can be quite a pain especially if you work from home, or it may be that your work laptop or desktop computer decides to keel over on you. It never hurts to learn things about computers especially in today's high technology world.

First, let us take a look at computer software and why it is necessary for your computer. Software is basically is programs and other needed data that gives your PC or Mac instructions on what to do. Unlike hardware, software is untouchable. It can also pertain to applications such as Word or Notepad. Also, there are typically downloads that will upgrade software so that it will run more smoothly.

Now hardware is different in the fact that it can be installed into any PC or Mac. Needed hardware is actually installed into the operating system of the computer and needs different software apps in order for it too work properly. Therefore hardware and software go hand in hand.

If you desire to use your system for gaming you are going to want to make sure you have an up to date sound card and video cards. A sound card is basically need for input and output of audio signals. This is good for any type of audio like music or for presentations for work or school in which you are speaking. Video cards allow you to be able to see visual graphics better. This is also helpful if you like to watch movies on your system and is good for gaming as well.

The power supply is also essential in running your system successfully. Much like its name, it indeed runs your PC and if it should go bad you are able to purchase a new one online or at an electronics store. This is indeed a quite simple item to change out yourself if you are a handy person.

The motherboard is basically a circuit board that holds the video card and audio card. This stores all the information of the computer. So, should your motherboard go out, it is quite expensive to fix and you may want to consider purchasing a new or refurbished laptop or desktop.

Familiarizing yourself with the major components of your intelligent digital machine can prove to be very helpful in the future. One day you may be able to even walk into an electronic store and select the parts you will need in order to build or repair your machine. You will also learn about upgrades and avoid expensive repair bills.

Computer Diagnostics: How to Fix a Slow Computer

By: Simon Cave

Why is my computer running slow?

The modern consumer PC is a complicated beast. Unlike a relatively simple machine such as a lawnmower or a stereo, computers have numerous points of failure that can inhibit or completely restrict proper functioning. Occasionally, a piece of hardware like a failing hard drive or faulty RAM modules are the reason your computer isn't humming along like it used to when brand new. However, it's far more often a software issue related to your operating system that's slowing down the machine. Whether you run Windows, Mac OS X or Linux, a little software optimization and house cleaning goes a long way in prolonging the life of any PC.

Due to the mind-boggling complexity of today's computers, good Computer Diagnostics tools are essential for the safe operation and long-lasting life of any machine. For instance, the Windows operating system has a few quirks that, if left unattended, can lead to a slowdown in performance over time. Dead-end shortcuts and links pile up over time, using up valuable disk space, leading to disk fragmentation and overall hurting responsiveness and usability. In addition, errors within the Windows Registry as well incorrectly deleted programs can lead to other important programs crashing. Without a Diagnostics Tool to tell you exactly what's going on, you have no real idea what's wrong with your PC when speed and performance issues occur.

As such, comprehensive Computer Diagnostics software is of paramount importance when it comes to getting the most out of your PC. Most technically savvy users possess the ability to manually tweak settings, schedule maintenance tasks, change startup programs, and troubleshoot issues that may crop up. Unfortunately, that ability to diagnose computer performance issues on the fly can take years of experience and learning, and we don't all have the time to become certified repair specialists. Specially designed Computer Diagnosis software gives ordinary users the ability to speed up their PCs by repairing malfunctioning programs, getting rid of unnecessary files automatically & choosing which programs should run on start up.

A dependable Computer Diagnosis software suite can do most of the heavy lifting for us normal, everyday users who don't possess a Computer Science degree or the gift of feeling out bugs in our operating systems. When choosing a Computer Diagnosis tool, reputation and track record are of the utmost importance. You're placing the health and longevity of your valuable computer in the hands of a third-party program, so you want to be sure that you opt for a Diagnostics and Analysis application that's time-tested and reliable. Don't just spring for the first free-ware service you find online. Thoroughly research the available options when buying a PC optimization software, and your computer will thank you in the long run.

Computer Diagnostics Software is the simplest way of finding & fixing issues that are causing poor PC performance, whether your computer is slow running, booting slow or taking forever to shutdown, by changing startup programs, fixing registry errors & optimizing the systems settings you can recover that original performance
